Mother pulls into the car park, and turning the key, the car buzzs
to a stop. Mother snatchs her wallet from the car’s dashboard
and opens her door, 

“I will stay in here and wait.” I say, as Mother shuts the car door and
talks through the open window. 

“Okay then May, what does dad want again?” she asks. 

“A coke zero, chips with chicken salt and battered snapper.” I say,
reciting the order.

“Right, be back in a sec” Mother says as she leaves the car and enters
the Fish and Chips shop. The door jingles to a close behind her. 

I sit in the car, only just noticing how eerie and silent everything is,
with not a human insight, save Mother and the chefs inside the shop,
everything feels odd. 

Somewhere in the distance a cat squalls, sending shivers down my
spine. Hurry up Mum! I think, bouncing in my seat. But I can see
Mother leaning against the counter chatting with the people.
Trust Mother to start a conversation with anyone!

It was then that the shadow of a man appeared, the man strolled
towards the Fish and chips shop, he dropped low and scooped
something off the ground. 

He hurriedly scanned his surroundings, making sure no one was
watching, there was no one. Except me. 

He spotted me, he changed direction and strode towards me and the
car. My heart froze. Breath caught in my throat, and I coughed a little. 

The man strode closer, and closer, his features became clear, 

Tattoos covered both his arms and a satchel was slung over his
shoulder carelessly. I held my breath. Scared for my life.
Why is he coming towards me!!  

I glance over at my mother. She is still chatting away.
She hasn't even looked to see if I am alright. Oh help! 

The man gets to the car, I am now in a panic, I want to scream, but I
am too scared to make a noise, in other words, I am petrified! 

“What are you looking at ya little sneak!” The man says in a whisper
only i can hear.

“N-n-nothing! Nothing at all. J-just, waiting for my f-food!” I stutter,
barely able to keep my voice straight. 

The man sneers. 

He reaches through the open car window and tries to grab my arm,
but I hurriedly pull away. 

“MUUMMM!!!” I scream.  The man panics, he pulls back from the
window and drops on all fours, so Mother does not see him. 

Mother bolts out of the shop, food in her arms. 

“May! What's wrong?” she says in a panicky voice.

I know she wont believe me. 

“This guy tried to steal me!” I half yell half say. Adrenaline is
pumping through my body and it's hard to talk normally. 

Mother laughs.

“Oh May! Very good! You know, I almost believed you. But, I mean.
That was something else!” she says, laughing hysterically. 

“But, it-its true!”  I pants. 

“Oh May, that has to be the best april fools day trick you have ever
done! Nicely played!”

I stare at her open mouthed, as she pulls out of the Fish and Chips
driveway.
