Danger

I lift my foot up, moving it away from the web of nettles, the sun-light reflecting off its shiny leaves, making my eyes hurt. The blades of grass dance sophorically in the wind, the dizzying heat casting the world into a heavy daze. To steady myself, I extend my hand out to the menacing boulder next to me, but it slips into a sharp crevice and red-hot blood oozes from my finger.

I lift my head up, making my vision sway, and look for the other hikers. They seem as distant as the city below me, its lights twinkling. I suddenly become aware of the height of the mountain edge I'm standing on, and the brown earth below my quaking feet seems to swim, becoming a murky river, and I imagine the green overgrown plants to be a crocodile: lurking just beneath the water, watching, waiting. My hands grapple at the earth and rock, but it gives way and I scream, the monstrous mountain swallowing me whole.
